The new-build south elevation is based on a formal repetition of cast stone units forming a simple post-and-beam frame

Elder and Cannon Architects

Large-format, wet-cast loadbearing Portland units are connected by a mixture of dowel guides and threaded rods to the upper units and by mortice and tenon joints to the lower units. Due to their mass and self-supporting capabilities, these units require only minimal restraint to the primary steel frame at floor zones.

Infill to this frame is provided by a high-performance, double-glazed curtain walling system. The large-span glazed panels enable high levels of natural light to penetrate deep into the inhabited spaces and also allow users to control ventilation with individual tilt-and-turn opening lights to each bay.

Security shutters of 3m-high have been fitted at ground level. These vertical louvred galvanised mild steel gates protect the glass at low level when the building is not in operation, but allow light to be emitted on to the street.

We detailed the secret fixings, sockets and drop bolt housings at an early stage, which allowed them to be cast into the units and ensures the complete assembly maintains a clean and uncluttered appearance on approach.

The insulated parapet upstand is set back to allow the balustrade to run behind the concrete piers, enabling the roof terrace frame to read clearly.
