Sandwell BSF programme has been investing in secondary school teaching and learning environments and transforming them into modern, well-designed, flexible spaces that are fit for the 21st century.
Specialising in sports, Oldbury Academy is one of four schools that are part of the Sandwell BSF programme and which have all included Ecophon products in their transformation. Hygiene Meditec™ in the washrooms, Hygiene Protec™ in the kitchen, and Advantage E™ in the classrooms, chosen for its class A sound absorption. Combison Uno™ on the upper floor and Combison Duo™ were used for their excellent sound insulation properties. The Sombra™ A system with its unique Connect black grid was used in the drama area for maximum effect.
The works at Oldbury Academy were approximately two thirds new build school accommodation and one third refurbishment of existing buildings.
Contractors, Interserve Construction, have broad experience in the education sector and in both the refurbishment and the design and build of secondary schools. They understand how physical conditions, including acoustics, can affect learning. So they specified a combination of Ecophon products to suit each area of the building.
The project began in December 2010 and was completed in January 2013 with the delivery of an excellent learning environment for the 21st century.
Head of Facilities at Oldbury Academy, Carol Woodhall has reported that the teaching staff is delighted with the new facilities and that the children care about the space and are enjoying life in their new school.
