dRMM wins Hastings Pier competition

Stirling Prize-shortlisted dRMM has won the RIBA Competition to redevelop Hastings’ fire-damaged pier

Shortlisted practices FAT, Adams & Sutherland, Wilkinson Eyre, Niall McLaughlin Architects and Swedish eco-specialist White AB, all lost out after a presentation and interview with the judging panel.

The London firm impressed the Trust with its ‘flexibility, lateral thinking, and value for money’.

“We need a design that can work as a catalyst for further regeneration of Hastings”

The competition was dealt an early blow in October when the Pier was burnt down by arsonists just days after the contest was announced. Tina Reid of competition-backer the Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust (HPWRT) said: ‘The interest we received in the competition and the quality of the practices was extremely heartening.’

Speaking about the victory, dRMM’s Alex de Rijke said: ‘We are delighted to be part of this unique project to recreate Hastings Pier. We shall work closely with both the Trust and the local community to redefine the Pier’s potential for a sustainable future. We need a design that can work as a catalyst for further regeneration of Hastings and St. Leonards”.

The first step in the process will be to securing funding for the clearing of debris and repairs to the structure.

A total of 54 practices entered the competition to restore the pier which opened in 1872 and was designed by Eugenius Birch, architect of Brighton’s now ruined West Pier.
