DRDH has won a competition to extend St Martin’s Cathedral in Ypres, Belgium
The studio defeated Gijs Van Vaerenbergh from Leuven and Anno Architecten from Ghent to win the scheme which will create a new entrance to the historic structure.
Planned to complete in 2018, the project is the final stage in the reconstruction of the building which was destroyed during the First World War.
New stairs, lifts and toilets serving a series of vaulted public rooms and the deanery will also be delivered.
According to a statement from the practice: ‘[The scheme’s] form and siting addresses and completes the adjoining ruined cloister, the last remaining ruin from World War 1.’
The practice is meanwhile among five teams shortlisted to overhaul St Hilda’s College at the University of Oxford. A winner is expected to be announced early next year.
