Donors pledge extra cash for Libeskind's Spiral at the V&A

  • Comment

The V&A Museum has received pledges of a further £10 million for its Spiral extension to add to the £20 million already promised. V&A director Alan Borg said the museum now expects the£80 million extension to be built and open by 2004.

Borg said the extension should now prove 'irresistible' to the Lottery - which originally turned down its bid for funding, saying that it was 'not sufficiently distinguished'. The £1.5 million donation from the Sainsbury family's Headley Trust is available immediately for design work while the other £8.5 million, from an anonymous donor, is contingent on raising the additional funding.
