Dome designer Gumuchdjian departs

news

Philip Gumuchdjian has been shunted off the project to design the content of the Shared Ground zone in the Millennium Dome. The nmec told the aj this week that Gumuchdjian, who came up with the initial concept of the zone to revolve around the community, is to be replaced by work. Gumuchdjian + Spence designed the exterior of the zone in association with Shigeru- Ban and the help of ‘Blue Peter’ viewers, who sent in the tens of thousands of pieces of cardboard from which it is made. Its construction by Mivan is nearly complete. The nmec said work - which had been chosen after many months of looking at other designers - would take on board Gumuchdjian’s broad ideas but refused to say why he had been blocked from implementing the interior scheme.
