Every conceivable building type has now been turned into an exhibition space, but the Americans want to go one further: a museum at Sing Sing - while the prison is still in use.

Li/Saltzman Architects is working on designs for the prison's oldest - derelict - cellblock. Crucial to the plans, however, is that visitors should not get even a glimpse of current inmates. Glenn S Goord, commissioner of correctional services, is not yet ready to comment on the proposals. 'The devil is in the details, ' he told the New York Times , 'and I haven't seen the details.'
