Director calls action over home

Jim Sheridan sues design team over ‘substantial damage’ to residence

Irish film director and producer Jim Sheridan is suing an eight-strong design and construction team, including Dublin architect de Blacam and Meagher, for £3.7 million (4 million euros) in damages over a ‘leaking’ luxury seafront home he cannot sell.

Sheridan, who directed the 1989 Oscar-winning film My Left Foot, and his wife Fran are suing eight companies involved in the project in Coliemore Harbour, Dalkey, Dublin, over allegedly defective work.

The Sheridans allege that because of negligence and faulty workmanship water has been seeping into their ‘dream home’ – which won an award from the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland in 2006 – over a number of years. As a result, the property suffered ‘substantial damage’ and the Sheridans have been unable to sell.

Among those being sued is London-based Gilmac Building Services, now in liquidation. It is said to have been negligent in installing an allegedly waterproof concrete system in 2004 and to have failed to carry out remedial works. Also being sued is Simon Hollingworth and Associates.

According to the Sheridans, de Blacam and Meagher issued a completion certificate for the property in July 2005, which contained no reference to water seepage when, it is alleged, the company was aware of a problem.

It is also claimed the architect had later written to Hollingworth and Gilmac asking for allegedly defective work to be made good.

A court date has yet to be set.
