Dick Cannon to chair 2012 Saltire Society Housing Design Awards

Scotland’s oldest design awards scheme has marked its 2011 Call for Entries with the announcement Dick Cannon of Elder and Cannon will be its guest chair

Cannon succeeds Malcolm Fraser who took over from John McAslan as annual chair of the awards last year.

The appointment comes one year after Elder and Cannon won the prestigious Saltire Medal for its ‘Botany Phase-One’ project In Glasgow’s Maryhill.  Cannon will decided which schemes receives the medal this year.

He said: ‘I am honoured to have been asked to chair these awards, which are highly respected and recognised as a measure of real achievement throughout the architectural community in Scotland.

‘The awards are an important vehicle for showcasing the work of which we Architects and House-Builders are most proud, but more importantly they present an opportunity for the industry at large to consider how to turn the debate on design quality into reality, and produce beautiful homes and environments.’

Jane Paterson has also been appointed to succeed judging panel member Simon Winstanley as convenor of the awards.

Patterson said: ‘As a member of the Saltire Society’s judging panel for the last 3 years, I have visited a number of Elder and Cannon’s residential projects. These projects have never disappointed the panel on any level; therefore it is with the greatest professional admiration that we have invited Dick Cannon to be this year’s guest chair.’

Saltire Society executive director Jim Tough said: ‘We are delighted to see the launch of the Saltire Housing Awards for 2012. We are grateful for the support from a panel of committed and expert practitioners, and that they have succeeded in installing another highly respected chair in Dick Cannon. These prestigious awards continue to be an important mark of success amongst the architectural community’.

The Scottish Government-supported award, now in its 75th year, is open to all housing schemes in Scotland.

The scheme was created in 1937 to promote innovation in Scotland’s housing stock and urban spaces.
