Dial lost out to Dome for Greenwich 2000

Astragal's column (AJ 7.9.00) comments on the millennium sundial in Greenwich Park. I think it should be pointed out that neither English Heritage, the Royal Parks nor the Stone Federation have shelled out a penny on the project, the first phase of which (the main sundial) is complete. The original scheme, first proposed in 1994, was to construct the largest sundial in the world in stainless steel, 180 feet (54m) in height, on the Greenwich Meridian.

This was put forward for the Greenwich Peninsula, when this site was selected, but turned down in favour of the Dome!
