Design tie-breaker

Stuck for somewhere to jot down that brilliant sketch? The winner of the riba publications tie competition has solved that problem. Mark Robinson, a fourth-year student who works part time in the bookshop, has called his idea 'a flash of inspiration'. His sober silk tie is backed with Tyvek, an appropriately named paper more commonly used as a roofing breather membrane. riba members can just turn their tie over and jot their bright ideas down, perhaps presenting it to the client later as a memento. A circular hole in the front exposes a section of Tyvek with the riba crest embossed on it, and a regular row of notches up one edge allows the tie to also be used for measuring drawings. The ties should be available by Christmas but Robinson is unlikely to be wearing one. 'I've grown out of ties,' he said. 'But I have an interesting collection. My favourite is by Jean-Paul Gaultier.'
