Design Engine unwraps Guernsey high school

  • Comment

Design Engine Architects has completed the first phase of the new Les Beaucamps High School, in Guernsey, the Channel Islands

The 660-pupil scheme on a ‘gently sloping’ rural site, replaces an existing secondary school which has remained open during the building works.

Arranged around a central, cloistered courtyard, the main 6,790 m2 block features a dark grey zinc roof and cyan and magenta glazing.

A spokesman for the practice said: ‘The courtyard can be accessed at various levels and is intended to be used throughout the school.

‘It provides protection from sea winds in the winter months and shaded space in the summer. A central terrace with sea views extends from the hall and dining spaces.’

‘The ‘collegiate cloister plan’ layout provides dual access to any one classroom, so that a vulnerable student can avoid confrontation. This encouraged movement also ensures children feel a sense of freedom when moving between in and outdoors.’

Internally the school features exposed concrete soffits and robust block work walls, incorporating bespoke curved corner blocks to avoid  vulnerable edges in circulation spaces.

The second phase includes a new sports building including a gymnasium, sports hall and swimming pool and is due for completion in December 2013.
