Denise Scott Brown: ‘The best women architects get is student life’

Postmodern icon Denise Scott Brown has called on women architects to embrace ‘feminist awareness’ in the fight against glass ceilings

‘I would say that being a student for a woman is about the best it gets,’ Denise Scott Brown has said.

Speaking in a pre-recorded address at the annual AJ Women in Architecture Awards luncheon in London today,  the veteran architect and co-author of Learning from Las Vegas said this is ‘a sad comment’.

‘There are as many women as men in the early stages of architectural practice, but as they move up the ladder, the glass ceiling really hits,’ she said.

‘I say to young women today, don’t cast out your feminist awareness: when the glass ceiling hits you, you will think it is your fault, unless you know a bit about feminism, and it will destroy you.’

Scott Brown spoke warmly of her time as a student at the Architectural Association from 1952-1954,

saying she ‘found her identity as both an architect and a woman there.’

She added that ‘Diversity is not a hair shirt, it’s an opportunity. And if we women think that way, and think what we can give, that’s very important.’

  • When I was a student Ms. Scott Brown was one of the few women role models we had. I wonder if she knows the impact she has really had on all us 50 somethings...She was amazing in her breadth and depth of influence. She has never been fully acknowledged for this.
