Campaigners are celebrating ‘a breakthrough’ in the battle to resurrect the world-famous Euston Arch following the government’s announcement to create a new super-station at Euston
Early plans drawn up by Terry Farrell for the new high speed railway ‘Super hub’ in London include reinstating the 1938 Doric arch, which was controversially demolished almost 50 years ago, at the front of the site.
Dan Cruickshank, founder of the Euston Arch Trust, said: ‘This is fantastic news. Now that the redevelopment of Euston is really moving, we should have very little trouble securing the backing to restore the Euston Arch.
‘It was built originally to symbolise a great engineering achievement - the world’s first long-distance railway - what better way to mark High Speed 2 than restoring this spectacular monument as a landmark gateway to the new Euston?
‘The architectural drama of the Arch would be the perfect match for the excitement of 250 mph trains.’

Expected to cost round £10 million to rebuild, Farrell has said he would ‘support the return of a reconstructed Euston Arch at the station’s front door’.
The Euston Arch Trust together with engineer Alan Baxter have already drawn up proposals showing how the arch could be adapted to house ‘twenty-first century requirements’ such as bars or galleries.
Two lifts within the side walls of the arch would allow full disabled access.
Actor and comedian Michael Palin, a patron of the Euston Arch Trust, added: ‘The forthcoming redevelopment of Euston Station provides an unmissable opportunity to reinstate the spectacular Euston Arch. We’re talking about a building of international importance – once reconstructed, it would vastly improve the public realm, attracting investment and visitors to this part of London.’
