Democratisation is here to stay

letters

Sheila Mullon (Letters, aj 28.1.99) has missed the point of tv programmes such as Changing Rooms et al. Protection of professional status is out, democratisation is in. Yes, there are a few things that amateurs can't do yet, like advanced brain surgery and structural engineering, but give them time, the Internet and more of these 'can-do' programmes.

It was Rod Hackney who started the rot by allowing owners of the houses in his first Macclesfield scheme to paint their front doors whatever colour they liked. Who knows where it will end . . . perhaps Jonathan Meades has an idea.
