David Walker submits 89m tower for London's Albert Embankment

David Walker Architects has submitted plans for a high-rise, 47-flat scheme at the Albert Embankment on the River Thames near Lambeth Bridge

The 89m-tall, two slab tower project sits between Foster + Partners’ proposed Hampton House project and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’ Eastbury House.

The mixed-use Prince Consort House scheme features a mix of residential apartments with office and retail space. The ground floor contains both retail and office space, first and second floors contain office space and residential is located above, with apartments becoming progressively larger as they near the top of the tower scheme.

The architect’s view

Practice founder, David Walker described the scheme: ‘The composition is arranged into two bars that are manipulated in plan, section, and elevation to create a finely articulated, distinct building that creates a varied silhouette when seen from all viewpoints. The stepped form breaks from the extruded orthodoxy of other recent and proposed developments in the area and establishes a distinct plan form that is domestic scale and allows for a variety of apartment layouts while maximising daylight to the habitable rooms. 

‘The building is arranged into two elements offset in height and in plan, and each articulated into three volumes that progressively step inwards to create a building with a varied silhouette from all viewpoints. The resulting terraces establish a distinctly residential character that is further emphasised by generous balconies incised into the ends of the main volumes. Wrap-around full height corner windows counterpoint the balconies to exploit the site’s outstanding views’.
