David Sheppard wins planning for 52m-long 'country house'

David Sheppard Architects has won planning under the ‘country house clause’ for this barn-like home outside Solihull

The £1.8 million scheme in Knowle is among only a handful of projects to have been approved under NPPF paragraph 55 - the replacement for the former ‘contemporary country house’ clause, officially known as Clause 11 of Planning Policy Statement 7 (PPS7).

The 52m-long building, which was given the green light by Solihull Metropolitan Borough District Council, features a rib-cage of larch timber posts infilled with stacked bricks ‘evoking an agricultural aesthetic’. The plans two gardens to sit within the 473m² rural home.

David Sheppard, the founder of the South Devon-based practice said: ‘Construction will start at one end and finish at the other.’

‘It is wood and brick throughout - walls, floors, ceilings and roof all in a modulated construction, staggered between ground and first floors with strategic periodic glazing within the module.’
