David Morley Architects has completed this secure mental-health unit for Bedfordshire and Luton Community Trust, comprising a series of intersecting linear blocks with a central double-loaded corridor. The simple building form keeps within the tight budget of £1000/m2 and precludes opportunities to climb onto the roofs. Brickwork and timber cladding are used on the long elevations to identify, respectively, secure patient areas and forecourt and public areas. The multi-purpose hall is distinguishable by its barrel-vaulted roof.
