Adjaye Associates is to design a cultural facility for a university in New York

The practice has been chosen to deliver the Center for Art and Culture at Colgate University in Hamilton.

Accommodating the Picker Art Gallery and the Longyear Museum of Anthropology, the building will become a social, creative and educational hub.

The ground floor is conceived as a community living room, broadening audiences for exhibits while establishing a social outlet for the local population.

The practice said in its early bidding documentation for the scheme: ‘The Center for Art and Culture will afford the opportunity to unite world-class architecture with global appeal, together with a true community resource for the university and for Hamilton.

‘This challenge is something that Adjaye Associates believes it can achieve and even surpass – exceeding expectations to reinvent the white cube for a broader audience.’

Adjaye Associates, which has offices in London and Berlin, has worked extensively in the US.

The firm has designed community libraries in Washington DC, the Smithsonian NMAAHC museum in the same city, and the Museum of Contemporary Art-Denver among others.

The outfit added in its submission: ‘The practice has established its reputation by designing buildings that break with traditional closed typologies and are open – encouraging social interaction and inter-disciplinary exchange.’
