Aukett Fitzroy Robinson and FAT to help create £100m carbon- and water-neutral urban renewal project

Darlington Borough Council has granted outline planning permission for the scheme at Lingfield Point in Darlington which will create 1,200 homes - all will meet either level four or six of the Code for Sustainable Homes - public sports facilities, local shops and restaurants, a medical centre and school as well as artists’ studios and allotments.

Masterplanners Aukett Fitzroy Robinson and designers FAT have helped to create the scheme, on the site of a former wool factory. The project aims to be 100 per cent carbon- and water-neutral and will include green technology such as a wind turbine and combined heat and power unit. All new homes at the site will be low energy using solar thermal technology as well as grey water recycling.

John Orchard, director of developers Marchday said: ‘This is fantastic news for Lingfield Point, Darlington and the wider Tees Valley.

‘We currently have over 1,500 people working here and the number employed on site could eventually exceed the 4,500 employed in the wool factory’s heyday.

‘We expect that a considerable number of people will live within walking distance of their workplace.

‘There will also be employment opportunities over the coming years as the plans become reality.’
