Daniel Hurd Associates, St Gerard's Church campanile, Castle Vale, Birmingham

  • Comment
CAB award for young practices, £1,000

The campanile was commissioned to create a glowing beacon for the community in Castle Vale. First it was envisaged as being an expression of 'sacred art and architecture', and second, it was intended to complement the existing 'inward-looking' Moderniststyle church built in 1981.

The architect used aluminium extensively in the structure: for the base frame, fabricated from 15mm cut and welded aluminium plate with a sandblasted finish; for the composite structural spine, incorporating aluminium extrusions fixed to a central circular hollow steel section; and for the serpentine glazing support casting.

The campanile's electronic bells are housed in an aluminiumframed and clad enclosure.
