CZWG's design for Rathbone Market approved

CZWG’s design for the £180 million Rathbone Market development in Canning Town, East London, has been approved by the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation

CZWG’s design a to revitalise the once famous market and shopping district. Developed around three phases, the 60,600m² scheme will provide new residential accommodation, retail and state-of-the-art community facilities. It will be one of the first sites to be developed within the wider masterplan framework conceived to regenerate the Canning Town area.

Phase 1 will lead the regeneration, with 270 flats and 2,322m² of retail. A 21-storey tower adjacent to Newham Way, at the western end of the scheme, will signal the regeneration of the market site and wider area and its spirited design will add to East London’s skyline.

The plans will also see a new market square, new shops and cafes and various improvements to the local environment.

  • The 'once famous' rathbone market - and all I see to improve it is a similar set of buildings that are as generic as just about any mixed development these days. Why does it not get some 'famous' treatment? Wouldn't that be more responsive to the site, the context, the history of this place? All I see is fresh materials. And another tower idea as a signal!
