Cuts: £25m swimming pool refurb scheme put on ice

Sports minister Hugh Robertson has axed a planned £25 million swimming pool refurbishment scheme, underlining the reality of the Treasury’s 25 per cent departmental budget cuts programme.

A 2003 report by Langdon Consulting estimated that around £550million was needed to bring the country’s pools up to scratch. Since then, little work has been undertaken on the scheme, and it now seems certain that, in the near future at least, none will.

Among the projects to face the axe is the Greenbank Leisure Centre, in Civic Way, Swadlincote - designed by B3 Architects - which has had a £650,000 Sport England grant to rebuild its pool withdrawn.

A spokesman for the local authority said: ‘South Derbyshire District Council applied for £649,000 of funding to refurbish the Greenbank Leisure Centre.

‘The scheme is being administered by Sport England but the money was due to come from Government departments.’
