Crossrail funding review threatens McAslan and Hawkins\Brown stations

The government has refused to deny rumours McAslan + Partners’ Bond Street Station or Hawkins\Brown’s Tottenham Court Road Crossrail station schemes could be ditched

The Department for Transport (DfT) is currently ‘reviewing’ its £5 billion contribution towards London’s Crossrail as part of the coalition government’s wider cost-cutting drive.

Potential budget reduction options for the £16.9 billion project include scrapping a costly central London station; reducing or removing spurs linking to Canary Wharf, Abbey Wood in the east, and Maidenhead; and shortening trains from 12 to 10 cars.

An in-house team at Crossrail is understood to be undertaking a review into ‘value engineering’ solutions for the project.

McAslan + Partners £300 million Bond Street station scheme, where work has yet to begin, is rumoured most likely to be dropped. A spokesperson for the practice however claimed the project was proceeding ‘business as usual.’

Major work is already in progress on Hawkins\Brown’s Tottenham Court Road station scheme which features a glass canopy designed by Stanton Williams. A spokesperson for the practice said: ‘Value engineering is being carried out across the whole of Crossrail. This may or may not affect the scheme for Tottenham Court Road.

‘Crossrail has a robust case to demonstrate its value and work continues. The benefits of Tottenham Court Rail are significant and recognised by all parties. ’

TfL denied the threat to the projects as ‘pure speculation’. A spokesperson said: ‘Any delay to the project would actually increase costs. The DfT and TfL continue to work to deliver Crossrail with the best possible value for money.’

A statement from DfT, which is stumping up £5 billion for the train line, left open the possibility of scrapping a station as a cost-saving option. It said: ‘No decisions have been taken to cut the scope of the Crossrail project.

‘However, we need to ensure that the scheme remains affordable. Crossrail are focused on optimising the scheme’s value for money through effective management of risk and best value engineering solutions.’

Last week Redbridge council approved a new £12 million Crossrail Tunnelling Academy at Ilford town centre.

  • This would be a travesty. When will a government understand the difference between spending and investment? This is a much needed project that will bring many immesurable financial and social benefits, and if delayed further will only cost more money in the future when it eventually is built. You must speculate to accumulate.
