CREMER STREET, EAST LONDON: DEVELOPMENT OF NEW FLATS FOR PEABODY TRUST

LEVITT BERNSTEIN ASSOCIATES

This site of a former multi-storey car park lies beside one of the proposed new stations on the East London Line extension to the Underground system and is within walking distance of Hoxton Square and the new Hackney Community College.

The proposals are based on a 50:50 split between housing for outright sale and housing for cost rent, with the surplus from sales being used to subsidise the rents of the remainder. The latest scheme, currently awaiting planning approval, consists of 69 flats in a mixture of one-, two- and three-bedroom units, with parking at semi-basement level, re- using the lowest level of the former multi-storey car park. The structure is loadbearing blockwork with external insulation and render, and the roof is a shallow profiled metal section falling towards the rear of the buildings.
