The building elements of the Challenger Learning Centre were let as two separate contracts.

The supply and erection of the prefabricated building units, including the provision of internal partitions and finishes: the installation of services and the completion of external works. These works were undertaken by S Wernick & Sons under a jct Intermediate Form of Contract 98 with amendments to incorporate elements of detail design responsibility.

The supply and erection of the external cladding shell consisting of steel trusses and tensioned pvc-coated polyester fabric. These works were undertaken by Aura Fabric Engineering under a jct Intermediate Form of Contract 98 with amendments to incorporate structural design responsibility.

In both of the contracts a sectional completion supplement was incorporated, so that in Spring 2001, some 15 months after the completion of the building at the Leicester University site, the contractors will return to dismantle the building and re-erect it adjacent to the newly completed nssc.

The design consultant for the building works was Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners with commercial management and project management undertaken by Capita Property Services and Gardiner & Theobald Management Services respectively. Throughout design and construction the project was characterised by positive teamwork, with all parties adopting a co-operative approach to resolve problems quickly and amicably. It is regarded as an outstanding success by the client and all those associated with it.

Costs

Costs based on approximate proposed interim final account figures for both building contracts (Aura and Wernick) for the section completion of the building. Costs do not include costs for moving building to final site in Spring 2001.
