Corb revisited

  • Comment

The recent conference in Chandigarh, marking the fiftieth anniversary of Le Corbusier's great work, saw an extraordinary simulation of the unbuilt part of the complex, following comments by Sir Denys Lasdun. He told the international audience he very much regretted that the government 'palace', because of its possible association with colonialism, had never been built, since it was a vital third element in the composition of the complex, the rest comprising justice and assembly buildings. Two days later there emerged a full-size mock-up of the palace elevation, created by contractors using white canvas. Who knows, what Nehru called India's 'temples of democracy' might one day be completed in their full splendour.
