Copper takes its toll

  • Comment

The curvaceous brown pre-oxidised copper surface of the Ettore Piras motorway toll at Lucca in Italy has been designed to reflect the undulating Tuscan landscape. The 1,635m 2roof is clad in KME Europa's TECU Oxid copper and rests on a frame of six tubular steel arches, painted burnt sienna for an overall chromatic effect, running parallel to the roadway with transverse load-bearing struts. A tubular pedestrian bridge, clad in the same copper strips as the roof, is suspended below the arches. TECU was chosen for its practical benefits of longevity, durability and low maintenance, but mainly for its aesthetic mirroring of the area.
