Copper-bottomed

The Copper Development Awards went off without a hitch on Thursday, with the architectural award going to Glas Architects for 2 Newhams Row.

After a flattering introduction, second-placed architect McAllister Co, designer of the Battersea Park boathouse (AJ 6.9.01), said that it 'nearly didn't apply because the detailing wasn't that good' and the project was 'quite small'. It is always worth applying. After all, the Innovation Award went to Portcullis House, a building clad in bronze, admittedly an alloy with 80 per cent copper, but an innovative use of the criteria.
