The merger of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Institute of Building Control (IBC) moved a step closer last week when the RICS council authorised the conclusion of negotiations.

Following this, a joint steering group of the two organisations held its first meeting. The president of IBC, Trevor Martin, said:

'We welcome the progress toward the aim of consolidating responsibility for building control practice.'
