Emerging Brighton-based practice a:b:i:r architects has finished these beach huts in Boscombe, Bournemouth designed specifically for people with disabilities
The four fully accessible huts - designed as two pairs with retractable partition walls for increased flexibility - can each accommodate up to four wheelchair users.
Funded as part of CABE’s Seachange programme, the project includes ‘high-colour contrast surfaces and flooring to assist the visually impaired, dual-height kitchen units with gas stove and a communal outside area with a fresh-water fountain.’
Linda Nelson from Bournemouth, who has been involved in the design development and has since rented a hut for an entire season, said: ‘I had trouble getting in and around the old beach huts and was constantly worried about falling over. These new huts take away all those old problems; they are a tremendous asset for the area and a fantastic facility for disabled people.’
