Contest launched for new Sevenoaks conference centre

The RIBA’s competitions office has begun the search for an architect to design a new community and conference centre in the Bat & Ball area of Sevenoaks, Kent

The scheme will replace the current facilities in Otford Road - the existing 30-year-old building deemed no longer fit for purpose and too ‘costly to upkeep and maintain’.

The new centre will be partially funded by Sevenoaks Town Council which is planning to sell off of council buildings as part of its commitment to ‘investing in the social capital for the future’ of the town.

The competition seeks proposals to design a new building for a number of uses, with spaces including a large community events hall and space to house the relocated council offices.

A shortlist of five teams will be invited to submit design concepts following an expression of interest phase, with each receiving an honorarium of £4,000.

Simon Raikes, Mayor of Sevenoaks said: ‘We look forward to receiving the architectural designs for the new Bat & Ball Centre and putting them on display to the public in May’.

Sarah Williams of S Williams Architects is acting as the RIBA Adviser for the competition, which is open to registered architects and architect-led teams based in the EU.

The deadline for application is 2pm on 12 March.
