BIRMINGHAM JEWELLERY QUARTER PEDESTRIAN LINK Open competition to provide a pedestrian route, a new viewpoint and an enduring landmark structure. The competition forms part of the Jewellery Quarter Urban Village Initiative. Prize money of £10,000 will be awarded.

BARN CONVERSION Open competition to select an innovative design solution for extended and new uses for a Grade II-listed barn within the village of Wycoller, near Colne, Lancashire. Open to registered architects. Submission deadline 5 January 2001.

HOLISTIC HOTELS Ideas competition to influence thinking on a ubiquitous, commercial building type. The competition, sponsored by the Design Advice Service, will address sustainable development issues raised by new build on a real urban site near Cardiff. Submission deadline 27 February 2001.

EUROPAN URBAN IDEAS Biennial international design competition with the goal of helping young architects develop and promote their ideas in Europe and further afield. The theme is 'In between cities, architectural dynamics and new urbanity'. This year's competition offers three UK sites, in Hackney, Peckham and Manchester.

SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS Ideas competition open that will address issues raised by new build (a new school or school extension) on a real urban site.

Objectives of the competition include raising awareness of sustainable, and very lowenergy school buildings.

Submission deadline 28 February 2001.
