HOLISTIC HOTELS Ideas competition and an opportunity to influence thinking on an ubiquitous, commercial building type. The competition will address sustainable development issues raised by both new build and refurbishment on a real urban site near Cardiff. Submission deadline 27 February 2001.

SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS Ideas competition to address issues raised by both new build (a new school or school extension) and refurbishment on a real urban site. Objectives of the competition include raising awareness of sustainable, and very low-energy school buildings, and examining the potential benchmarking standards such as the 'ecopoints'system. Deadline to be advised.

EUROPAN URBAN IDEAS Europan is a biennial international design competition with the goal of helping young architects develop and promote their ideas in Europe and further afield. The theme for Europan is 'In between cities, architectural dynamics and new urbanity'.

Architects can submit designs for sites in 20 different countries, with UK sites in Hackney, Peckham and Manchester. The submission deadline is 5 March 2001.

CONSERVATORY DESIGN UK home improvement company Everest is to hold an open competition for the design of a conservatory, to be constructed at the Ideal Home Show in spring 2001. Open internationally to architects, designers and students, the submission deadline is 28 November 2000.
