URBAN SUSTAINABILITY The government's Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme has launched its fourth open ideas competition to promote sustainability. The theme of this year's competition is urban sustainability and entrants will be invited to explore various issues. The 5ha site is the Lochend Butterfly and its surroundings, about a mile from the eastern end of Princes Street in central Edinburgh. A prize fund of £17,500 is on offer. The deadline for submissions is 28 February.

COUNTRY HOUSE Single-stage open competition for the design of a new country house to be built in a Gloucestershire valley, on a site comprising 32ha of pasture and woodland. The site enjoys an elevated position in the Cotswolds. Designs should enhance and contribute to the surroundings and architectural heritage. Further information at www. countryhouse. co. uk
