A new music centre for St Andrews University, upgrading the State Library of Victoria and regenerating Winchester station approach. The editor’s pick of this week’s leading competitions

The University of St Andrews has announced a design competition for a new music centre. The project on historic Queen’s Terrace will create a new home for the university’s music centre which is currently based inside the iconic 1828 Younger Hall (pictured) on North Street. Australia’s Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources is seeking an architect to regenerate the State Library of Victoria. Planned to complete in 2020, the £40 million project will restore the historic Queen’s Hall reading room and Russell Street entrance and create 1,000m2 of new public space. [Deadline for expressions of interest 9 November]

Winchester City Council is on the hunt for an architect to regenerate two sites on the main approach to its train station. ‘High quality and contemporary’ proposals are sought for the council-owned Carfax and Cattlemarket plots which are expected to feature commercial, residential and retail development. [Deadline for applications 18 November]
