A new cultural centre for Bamiyan, overhauling Sussex university’s life sciences buildings and a medical centre in South Kilburn. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

UNESCO has launched a design competition for a £1.6 million cultural centre in historic Bamiyan, Afghanistan. The ‘innovative and inspirational’ structure will occupy a 26,000m² site overlooking the Hindu Kush and the empty niches of two giant statues of Buddha which were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001 [Deadline for submissions 22 January]

The University of Sussex is on the hunt for an architect to redevelop its life sciences buildings. Budgeted at between £20 million and £60 million, the project will regenerate all existing life sciences buildings and supporting facilities on the Basil Spence-designed Falmer campus close to Brighton [Deadline for requests to participate 19 December]

The London Borough of Brent is seeking an architect to redevelop a 1.4 hectare housing estate site in South Kilburn. The appointed architect-led, multidisciplinary design team will work up detailed plans for a new health centre and around 235 residential dwellings [Deadline for requests to participate 22 December]
