Malta’s national monument, a business centre for University College Cork and Darlington civic theatre. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

The Republic of Malta has launched a design contest for a new national monument. The £84,000 landmark in the capital city of Valletta will be a symbol of national identity for the Mediterranean island which split from the British monarchy in 1974. Submissions to the two-stage open anonymous contest can be in English or Maltese [Deadline for submissions 25 April]

University College Cork in Ireland is on the hunt for a design team for a 4,000m² business centre. The new building on the 16.3 hectare Cork Science and Innovation Park will feature incubator units alongside tenant space and a café. A planning application for the design and build project is expected by the end of this year [Deadline for responses 22 April]

Darlington Borough Council is seeking a design team to overhaul the north-east of England market town’s Grade II-listed civic theatre. Formerly known as the Hippodrome and Palace Theatre, the 1907 structure was designed by Birmingham-based theatre architects Owen & Ward [Deadline for requests to participate 25 April]
