Varna’s new central library, upgrading shop fronts in Hillingdon and regenerating the Loch Lomond visitors centre. The editor’s pick of this week’s leading competitions

Bulgaria’s third largest city, Varna has launched an open international competition for a new £15 million central library. The contest seeks ideas for a new 18,500 m2 building which will house up to 1,266,000 volumes  and be Black Sea port’s first new library in 30 years. [Deadline for submissions is 9 November]

The London Borough of Hillingdon is on the hunt for design teams to upgrade shop fronts and create new branding on its high streets. The £1.1 million project is divided into two lots covering 55 retail units in Eastcote Town Centre and around 14 shops on Ryefield Avenue. [Deadline for requests to participate 12 October]

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority (LLTNPA) is seeking an architect to overhaul its Bennetts Associates-designed visitors centre. The winning team will refurbish and reconfigure the iconic 857m² structure at Lomond Shores which is set to be transformed into a new restaurant and venue.
