Sessay village hall, upgrading Kai Tak River in Hong Kong and a student ideas contest for Philadelphia’s Petty Island. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

The RIBA has announced an international design competition for a ‘striking’ new village hall in Sessay, North Yorkshire. Four teams will be shortlisted for the project which will replace existing ‘poorly designed, thermally inefficient’ facilities with a new building to cater for increasing visitor numbers [Deadline for entries 28 October]

Hong Kong’s Civil Engineering and Development Department has opened a competition to overhaul the Kai Tak River. Planned to complete in 2021, the project will transform the urban waterway into a new people-friendly open space with improved connections to the surrounding Kai Tak regeneration area [Registration deadline 22 September]

The Philadelphia Centre for Architecture has launched a student competition to rejuvenate Petty Island featuring a £3,000 top prize. The contest seeks ideas to transform the underused island and nearby land beside the Delaware River into a new complex addressing ‘today’s and tomorrow’s cultural, environmental, and economic needs’ [Registration deadline 2 October]
