An £80 million neighbour to Mies’ Neue Nationalgalerie, beach huts in Eastbourne and upgrading Manchester Cathedral’s west end. The editor’s pick of this week’s leading competitions

The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation has launched an ideas competition for a new £80 million museum of modern art in Berlin. Open to teams of architects and landscape architects, the contest seeks ideas for a new 14,700m² structure next to Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie in the Kulturforum district. [Deadline for requests to participate 8 December]

Eastbourne Borough Council has announced a design contest for a series of £10,000 beach huts. Planned to complete in December 2016, the project will deliver four ‘bold and imaginative’ beach huts east of the coastal town’s historic pier which partially burnt down in 2014. [Deadline for applications is 9 October]

Manchester Cathedral has launched a contest to redevelop its historic west end. Planned to complete in time for the cathedral’s 600-year anniversary in 2021, the £7million project will create new offices, retail, storage and toilet facilities within the Grade I-listed building. [Deadline for requests to participate 30 October]
