Bristol’s new indoor arena, masterplanning Moscow’s riverfront and rethinking vacant plots in New Orleans. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

The RIBA has launched an international design contest for an ‘inspiring’ new £90 million indoor arena in central Bristol. Planned to complete in 2017, the Bristol City Council-backed project will create a multi-purpose venue with capacity for 12,000 people on a former diesel depot site next to Temple Meads railway station [Deadline for applications 18 September]

Moscow’s Committee for Architecture and Urban Development has opened an international competition to regenerate 10,400 hectares of riverfront plots and embankments within the Russian capital. Six shortlisted teams will receive around £66,000 each to develop masterplans and a winner will be chosen for the £100,000 contract in December [Deadline for entries 12 September]

The Van Alen Institute has announced an open ideas competition seeking new uses for swathes of vacant land in New Orleans. Three teams will receive around £9,000 each to develop ‘flexible design and policy strategies’ for the hurricane-struck city as part of a six-month research programme [Deadline for submissions 29 September]
