Upgrading Birmingham’s Centenary Square, regenerating Hay Castle and a new museum for Pompeii. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

The RIBA is launching an international design competition to overhaul Birmingham’s iconic Centenary Square. Shortlisted teams will receive £5,000 each to develop designs for a ‘desirable cultural hub and significant space’ in the city centre plaza which is home to Mecanoo’s new Library of Birmingham [Deadline for submissions 2 December]

An architect is sought to overhaul Hay-on-Wye’s ruined Norman castle. Planned to complete in 2018, the £4 million project – backed by the Hay Castle Trust – will deliver major structural repairs and create a new ‘economically and culturally vibrant centre for arts and education’ inside the historic fortress [Deadline for requests to participate 27 October]

An international ideas competition has been launched for a new museum of Pompeii in Italy. Open to students and professionals under 40 years old, the contest – featuring a £390 top prize – seeks proposals for a new structure to preserve the ruins of the former Roman city which was destroyed by a volcano eruption around two thousand years ago [Deadline for entries 30 November]
