Rethinking Pyramid Square in Albania, Aberdeen University’s new student association and social housing in Northern Ireland. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

The Albanian Ministry of Culture has launched an open international ideas competition to rethink Pyramid Square in Tirana. Open to students and architects under 40 years old, the contest seeks a strategy to reinvent the controversial 17,000m² structure which opened in 1988 as a museum to the Balkan country’s former communist dictator Enver Hoxha and is now a broadcast centre [Registration deadline 15 September]

The University of Aberdeen is seeking an architect for a new £4.6 million students’ association. Planned to complete in 2017, the project will extend and refurbish the association’s current home inside the two-storey Butchart Recreation Centre on the university’s King’s College Campus [Deadline for requests to participate 29 August]

Clanmil Housing Association is on the hunt for an architect for a social housing scheme in Derry-Londonderry. The project will deliver between 75 and 80 new units on a vacant former brownfield site at 137 Northland Road in the east of the city [Deadline for requests to participate 1 September]
