I am disappointed to see that the AJ is still carrying design competitions (Innovation from Tradition - the William Sutton Trust) that exclude older members of the profession. I can see no good reason why a competition on such an important subject as social housing should perpetuate such prejudice.
Far too many competitions are aimed at the young. There are many of us our here who are older, possibly even significantly older, who have not had great career opportunities or been able to participate in competitions in the past (in my case, I was abroad). This does not mean that we are poor designers: many other factors affect career progress, not the least being good luck and good contacts.
There is far too much ageism in this profession, as it is for this to be compounded by many competitions which exclude older professionals who have much experience and design knowledge to offer in important areas such as social housing.
