[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] AJ/Corus 40-under-40 practice Coffey Architects has drawn up this 40,000m2 urban masterplan for steel giant Qingdao Iron and Steel Group in China
Dubbed the Cloister, the scheme in Qingdao includes new offices – to replace existing units – as well as catering, research, sports and sales buildings.
Describing the scheme, practice founder Phil Coffey said: ‘The Cloister is an allegorical production line whose formal section is that is that of a steel ingot, it acts as the main circulation and services route carrying energy from a local electricity generating plant - run from waste heat off the steel production line - to each of the linked buildings.
‘The scheme glows at night to visually express the use of this recovered energy from the steel plant.’
The project is due to start on site in August.
