Coffey completes north London home extension

  • Comment

[First look + plans + project data] Coffey Architects has completed this renovation of a five bedroom house, in Lancaster Road, north London

The 270m2 scheme by the winner of last year’s Stephen Lawrence Prize includes a triple-height, ‘square spiral’ internal steel staircase and a new main living space.

The architect’s view

‘The main living space is orientated to embrace the newly expanded garden celebrating the tension of geometry between the Cartesian layout of the home and the splayed extension. The unique relationship between the garden and the north-west facing structure is further enhanced by large sliding doors to the north-west and to the south east a large roof light that tracks the day light in the living space through out the day. A recessed light void energetically runs through the ceiling visually stitching the new and old together.
‘The bespoke staircase continues this sense of dramatic energy within the home as it rises through the central space of the building, the newly adapted roof space. The light well’s zenith, a large skylight brings more light into the original residential structure. The staircase inserts itself within the traditional first and second floors with careful detailing and culminates in the eaves to deliver a destination of further bedrooms and bathrooms, suitable for a family environment.
‘To further emphasise harmony between the old and new Coffey architects treated the old home areas with muted colours that are respectful of the original design features of the Victorian home. Internally, the new areas compliment with contemporary muted tones including white walls, birch plywood cladding and a powder concrete floor inviting movement and flow from entrance to garden. Externally the extension converses with brick through the use of aluminum and larch cladding.’
