On my recent return from abroad I was delighted to read in AJ 26.2.98 that the RIBA is to establish this year a 'Client of the Year' Award. This recognition is to be applauded, although it would be noted that it has taken 161 years for this to happen, since the RIBA was founded in 1837. With the RIBAmotto being 'Usui civium decori urbium' (rendered in the charter as 'to promote the domestic convenience of citizen and the public improvement and embellishment of town and cities') I should have thought recognition of the client would have happened sooner.
I do sincerely hope that this step will be to the benefit of the RIBA membership - as I noted in my previous letter 29.1.98.
