It appears reports that David Chipperfield has been appointed as the curator of the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale are premature
The RIBA Gold Medalist and Stirling Prize-winner confirmed that he had not yet been officially given the role as doubt remains over the director for the showpiece architectural event in Italy.
Last week it emerged that Giulio Malgara, an ally of former Italian president Silvio Berlusconi, had withdrawn from the race to replace ‘the highly-respected’ Paolo Baratta who had headed the Biennale in 2008.
Chipperfield told Astragal: ‘There is no president of the Biennale, so no appointment [of a curator] could be made - even if somone had been selected.’
Rumours abound that Baratta may yet return to the role. Watch this space.
