Architects have threatened a boycott on China projects following artist Ai Weiwei’s incarceration for ‘economic crimes’
Reports by the Chinese state news agency have claimed Ai – who had been missing along with friend Wen Tao since Sunday – is being investigated by the police in relation to ‘suspected economic crimes in accordance with the law’.
American architect Lebbeus Woods said he would ‘not accept another project in China until Ai is released’.
Ai’s family labelled the ‘economic crimes’ allegation ‘abursd’.
Gao Ge, Ai’s sister, told Reuters: ‘The economic crimes report is absurd, because the way he was taken and then disappeared shows it’s nothing of the sort.
‘This is more like a crime gang’s behaviour than a country with laws.’
Ai was led away by police at Beijing Airport as he attempted to board an aeroplane. His family claim the authorities visited Ai’s home in the weeks preceding the arrest.
